Burroughs Wellcome Fund "Becoming Faculty" Workshop

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF) “Becoming Faculty “ Workshop

BWF will support participation of a select group of trainees at similar career stages as YIA applicants in a 4 day workshop concurrent with the 2016 Symposium.  Awardees must be able to participate in the entire 4-day program, July 28-31, 2016.  All YIA applicants will automatically be considered for the BWF workshop, there is no separate application process for the BWF workshop only.  Therefore, persons wishing to be considered for the BWF workshop must apply for the YIA award.

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund, an independent private foundation whose mission is to advance the medical sciences, is organizing - Becoming Faculty, a short career development course that will run parallel with the upcoming Merial-NIH National Veterinary Scholars Symposium, from Thursday, July 28th through Sunday, July 31st, 2016 at The Ohio State University.

This workshop is aimed at veterinarian-scientists who plan to have a research-intensive academic career. Veterinarians who are postdoctoral fellows in laboratories, senior residents with substantial research experience, or after significant clinical experience and are now senior graduate students are the course’s intended audience. Please encourage your institution’s trainees to apply.

The workshop is meant to provide advice and insight on how to prepare for a competitive, grant-fueled academic research career, including how to navigate the job search, choose the right job offer, start a new lab, become “a boss”, manage one’s clinical responsibilities and teaching responsibilities, establish funding and independent publishing, and build a happy and satisfying-if somewhat hectic – life. A draft agenda will be sent out shortly, as speakers are still being confirmed.

Selection will be based on the quality of the Young Investigator Award applications and relevance of the applicants’ research and clinical backgrounds. Students currently enrolled in DVM/PhD programs are far less likely to be invited than applicants who have finished their veterinary training and had more clinical exposure. Application for participation in this workshop is made by applying for the AVMA-AVMF sponsored Young Investigator Award; see attached instructions.

Course participants’ transportation to Columbus, Ohio, rooms at the meeting hotel, meals, meeting registration, and course materials will all be covered by a grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.
